Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System This Season.

The Championships court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the ability to challenge particular calls from the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol currently in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step arrives only a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can request.

Practical Application

A recent case took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
